So it's yet another game with the same Gaspy3 theme

casts mobility, and moves up behind the barrels to cast Ashen Veil onto the top
group of McThralls, where it will make a difference (unlike against the

to Cankerworm. Start the turn off, the
Necrotech moves b2b and amazingly, heals all 5 damage! First time for
everything here. McThralls1 run up to
try and keep his cav from getting near the flag, impacts need 8’s to hit, so
hopefully that will slow him down. One
PW runs way up to hopefully get a bead on Eiryss next turn, while the other
runs to take cover behind the barrels.
Necrosurgeon1 walks up and drops a Thrall. I walk up McThrall unit 2 to just contest his flag and make it
hard for him to score any points, but there’s not much chance of him getting to
the zone right now, so I don’t have to commit to the flag very hard. Walk Necrosurgeon 2 to try and get corpses,
then Gaspy casts Mobility and jumps up on the barrels so that the Cankerworm
will be able to come back after his attacks.
Canker then charges and AP’s the middle Shocktrooper for 4 health at
dice-2. Going back thru the log, I realized that he didn’t do the AP right,
instead put in the damage at dice-6 instead of dice-2, so that guy would be
dead… ugh. You really have to stay on
top of people sometimes. Anyways,
Cankerworm backs off of things here, and the Kraken charges in with his P+S 21
chain striking chain weapon, so 4” reach at dice+4 against the
shocktroopers. The Kraken kills his
charge target (who fails his tough) and boosts his Killshot at Valachev with
concealment, hoping to catch Cylena in the crossfire. Sadly, she’s not close enough, but at least the Nyss aren’t
zephyring into my backfield. Kraken
takes his other arm on the next shocktrooper, and hits with boxcars then
snake-eyes for damage, leaving him at 1.
I buy one last attack, boxcars, and then 11 for damage, and he fails his
tough, filling the Kraken up with his corpses.
The Machine Wraith runs up to block off some real estate by the Kraken,
in the hopes of helping him stay alive, then the Bile Thralls come and hang out
behind him too.

His turn, bottom of round 2:

Upkeeps FFE. Eiryss
runs to the center PW and stands back to back with him. L Mortar with FFE shoots at a McThrall in
unit2 that’s out of range, but does some damage to 1 Brute and kills 1
Thrall. Irusk moves up a little and
pops feat, then switches FFE to the R Mortar.
He goes to shoot the PW behind the barrels, before I tell him that he
probably doesn’t have a magical gun. So
instead, he airbursts the PW and does 2 damage, but he ends up killing
Eiryss. Anyways, that was pretty nice
for me since I can now allocate focus to the Canker next turn if I feel like
it. Shocktroopers go next and shield
wall, but only the bottom guy with one wound moves towards the Kraken and fails
to damage. A&H move up so that Holt
can gun down to McThralls from unit1, while Aiyanna throws magical weapons onto
the Uhlans. 3 of them charge, 1 at each
PW and the leader at the Brute Thrall who is on the flag, while the last 2 run
to provide extra ARM to their buddies.
The top PW is smushed pretty easily by the MAT 8 Cav charge, and the
bottom PW is killed even at effective DEF 16 thanks to Ashen Veil. At least Ashen Veil reduced the amount of
dead McThralls from impacts, but the Brute exploded from the charge. Nyss go next and kill a Brute and a
McThrall, while one engages the Kraken.
R Mortar shoots at the last Brute in unit1 and kills him and a stitch
thrall.

My turn, top of round 3:

I just need to kill 3 horsies and to move something in to
touch the zone to score. Shouldn’t be
that hard, the only issue being Irusk’s stupid feat catching 1 Bile Thrall and
turning them all into DEF 3. I hate
those stupid model/unit feats that you catch one dude in the unit and they’re
screwed. Anyways, I start with
Vociferon, who runs in order to try and snag some souls. Then I realize that I forgot to
allocate/upkeep scything touch, ashen veil I was at least planning to
drop. Good thing he killed Eiryss for
me so that I could allocate. That said,
I could have ended the game right there with that focus on the Kraken. 15/15 are sad stats for casters. Anyways, Biles go next, and are way shorter
than where I thought because I figured that –2 SPD was only for models in his
ctrl, not whole units. I purge with 3 dudes,
don’t kill any of his models, corrode the Canker and Kraken, kill a McThrall
who is in his feat (yaay, something right!).
Gaspy goes next, casts Mobility, and charges one of the Uhlans, spends a
focus for the boosted attack, then gets to cast Carnage for free thanks to
Blood Boon. Then he buys an attack on
the other Uhlan in his reach, but fails to kill. The Machine Wraith runs to be closer to the Spriggan, but away
from pesky A&H, since I didn’t have the range to get to the Spriggan with
the –2 SPD. Canker then walks up and AP
attack, boxcars the hit, but he toughs, so the Canker walks back out of the
way. Kraken walks away from the Nyss
(who I expected to die to a purge), and he rolls 17 for damage on the 4 dice,
dropping 8 damage and clearing 2 columns.
Kraken hits and kills at dice+4 on the wounded Shocktrooper, then killshots
into the Mortar in the hopes of killing A&H, since I can’t hit DEF 15
without any focus. As it turns out, I
can’t hit DEF 12 without focus either, and the deviation only covers the
loader, who toughs. The R arm on the
Kraken kills the other shockie, but he toughs it out as well. McThralls 2 just move forward to contest the
Flag and hopefully not be as terribly positioned so that I can actually get
corpses. That Necrosurgeon walks up and
drops her 2 McThralls as well.
Necrosurgeon1 then walks up and drops her 2 dudes, and McThralls1 get to
charge the cav. I get 1 dude in b2b
with the flag, and forget to run 2 dudes in to be within 4” so that I can own
the flag and score here. The injured
horse dies easily, and gives Gaspy another soul, while 3 combostriking
McThralls kill the other horse.
Necrotech runs up to hopefully repair the Kraken next turn, but that’s
all I’ve got.

His turn, bottom of round 3:

He starts by upkeeping FFE (1 soul from feat, but 3 total),
and allocates 3 to the Spriggan. Corrosion
kills 1 Shocktrooper and gives Vociferon a soul. A&H move up, Holt kills 2 more McThralls while Aiyanna Harms
the Kraken (5 souls total). Spriggan
then charges the Kraken, hits with an 11, then rolls 18 on the damage for total
of 19. His shield attack does no
damage, but with his next two bought attacks, he rolls 8 and 9, for another 19
damage to the Kraken and 2 more souls on Gaspy. At this point, I have 2 columns left and no arms. FFE Mortar shoots at McThralls, but out of
range and only kills one on the deviation.
I mention the CMD check on the Uhlans from last turn, and of course they
pass. He charges them into the
McThralls around the flag, kills 3 with impacts, splats the necrosurgeon and
another McThrall. Irusk then back away
and switches FFE to the other mortar, who shoots at a bile thrall, catching
Vociferon and the Necrotech barely in the blast. Vociferon lives on 1, but the Necrotech is dead, ruining any
hopes of repair. Nyss go next, kill
Vociferon and some McThralls, but nothing major.

I start by allocating 3 to the Kraken and 1 to
Cankerworm. Corrosion disappears on
Canker, but does another point to the Kraken.
The Machine Wraith starts things off by stealing his Spriggan, then the
Canker walks over and eats the closer Uhlan by the flag (giving Gaspy his first
soul of the turn) and repositions to score on it. Gaspy casts Mobility next, walks 8, and kills the Shocktrooper
for another soul.. With Blood boon, I’m
just out of range for Hex Blast onto Irusk, so I throw it onto his Mortar, but
both dudes tough again. I buy and boost
an attack on Holt, and get a 3rd soul. Kraken is no longer engaged, so aims and shoots at Irusk, who
apparently gets elevation from standing on an obstacle. 10’s to hit, boosted on the big gun, and I
miss. POW 10 blast damage still gets
him for 1 point. D3+1 hellblasters, and
I get 2 shots total… ugh. Dice-3 on the damage, so I figure I’ll boost both
attacks and try and get some decent dice for damage. First boosted shot hits, but no damage, then the second shot hits
and does 7 damage. So it almost
averages out, but I’d rather have his dice.
McThralls 1 up by my Flag need 8’s to hit, and I get 2 charges. Since there’s no DEF line, I figure not
combo striking is the way to go. One
good charge attack should finish him.
Miss first swing, no damage on the non-charge. Second guy hits on his charge, only rolls an 8 so leaves him on 3
life and I don’t score… again. I should
have cast carnage with blood boon here.
Oh well. McThralls2 run/charge
to engage as many nyss as possible, and kill 1 Nyss. Necrosurgeon had run up to try and collect corpses too, but I got
nothing.

His turn, bottom of round 4:
He forces out the Machine Wraith with Irusk, then upkeeps FFE on the bottom
Mortar, who shoots at Gaspy, but misses and deviates to hit nothing. Aiyanna moves back and goes for the Harm,
but misses! Irusk then backs up and
switches FFE onto the other Mortar, who only needs a 12 to hit Gaspy, which it
does. Then he rolls a 13 for damage at
dice-5 for 8 damage. I remember in the
middle of my next turn when I move Gaspy further forward that Mortars have a
minimum range of 8”, and Gaspy was < 6” away. Ugh, I really need to remember that crap. The Spriggan pokes the Kraken at dice-1 and
does 8 more damage! The Shield hits and does 2 more damage at dice-5, so now
the guns are out. The Uhlan missed 2
attacks at McThralls, which is kinda funny.
Then the Nyss walk up, giving me one free strike, which still
misses. He ends up killing the Brute,
some regular Thralls, and the Necrosurgeon.
tries to hit Gaspy in the back, but misses.
Irusk casts Battle Lust on himself, then walks over the obstacle to get
at Gaspy. Boosts the attack and hits,
boosts damage, and rolls a 10 on 4 dice.
Buys an attack and hits the 8, then rolls a 14 on his 3 dice for 4
damage. Nothing the Nyss do matters, so
I score again at the end of his turn for my 2nd point and the win.

So there were lots of things that I could have done better this game, but most importantly positioning. Specifically, I mean not leaving guys out of formation/out of scoring and keeping all my dudes in corpse collection range. I got lucky that he misplayed pretty heavily IMO, not focusing fire on the Kraken on his 2nd turn to kill it, especially without my feat popped. That said, I think I did a decent job at controlling the pace of scenario, even with screwing up my own positioning and underestimating how spread out his cav could be. Anyways, my dice probably weren't bad overall, but they were terrible on damage and key rolls. Just abysmal luck it seems, and that stupid Mortar made it through 2 or 3 tough checks, which was way not cool. Roh well, still a good learning experience.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-65785812994485881392012-07-11T00:18:00.001-07:002012-07-11T00:18:21.995-07:00More Gaspy3 Batreps! So I may have been super bitchy about dice during this game, but there were
definitely some things that I could have done a lot better. To start, Satyxis should have been charging
his jacks with Scything Touch to deal a bunch of damage to Vlad early, and to
tie his dudes up. Then a mobilitied
Kraken could have ripped through all his riflemen. Another big thing is to not forget my feat on turns that I commit
the Kraken. That was just plain
dumb. Finally, a better last ditch
thing would have just been to upkeep Ashen Veil on the Raiders, run them in to
engage and give –2 to his living models against a camped/feated Gaspy. Then I would have been DEF 17 to Vlad’s MAT
10, and ARM 23 to his P+S 16, giving me much better odds of survival. Anyways, lots of stupid things that could be
done better. Probably most important is
not using Satyxis Raiders to their fullest.
jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-51673942322269091782012-07-06T15:10:00.000-07:002012-07-06T15:13:50.289-07:00Vassal Battle Report! Gaspy3 vs. pBaldur

So I recently started playing Vassal, which has been great. It is not nearly as clunky as I recall it being, plus it can keep a log of the whole game! That makes battle reports so much easier, so big thanks to Sleet01 from the forums for mentioning that. Anyways, I think it's going to be pretty nice to use since I won't have nearly as much time to go to the game store for games after I get married. On to the game at hand!

McThralls and adding a pip of damage to the Cankerworm. Baldur then charges a Druid in the back and
feats, misses the Druid with his charge attack, then puts Stone Skin on the

Baldur upkeeps solid ground, and I totally forgot to nab a soul from

the 4 with blast damage. L Woldwarden
goes, punches 2 dudes, and then he Geomancies Earth Spikes at McThralls on the
hill… stupid ignoring elevation bs.
Anyways, kills more McThralls, and 3 more souls to Gaspy. Baldur moves up and smacks a Brute for some
damage, and then drops his forest to block LOS to himself and buys an attack
that misses on a nearby McThrall, sitting on 2 fury for transfers. His Druids walk up, Countermagic, Devouring at McThralls, and
clouds to give me 6 more souls.

So even with bad rolls, I kill Baldur with 4 focus to
spare. That said, if he hadn’t
overloaded me with souls, I would probably have failed at the end
there due to craptastic dice . Anyways, it was a fun game where
I was getting table pretty good, but he left me an opening and fed me up on my
feat turn. I might have been able to get
some charges off on my 2nd turn with some McThralls and maybe the
Kraken, but I’m terrible at distance judging on Vassal right now. Hopefully I’ll get better at that soon. As for this being my first game with him
against Circle (good for my feat turn), it was definitely fun, and there’s a
whole lot of different ways that I could have played better. That said, I’m really loving Vassal and
being able to go back afterwards and look at dice, etc. While in game it felt like he had a lot of
good dice, his dice weren’t all that crazy except for just crit KD’ing or
hitting some targets of opportunity. So
moral of the story, expect more battle reports like these. I’ve got another log that I need to work
through to put up as well.
jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-37820798382596310502012-06-20T23:36:00.003-07:002012-06-20T23:37:19.628-07:00Actually painted McThralls

Since I've actually been playing Cryx and loving Gaspy3, I decided it was high time to paint up the last unpainted McThralls that I have. That means my 4th Brute Thrall and the last 11 regular McThralls. I initially primed these guys when I got them in the same Army Painter Necrotic Flesh, planning to dip them the same as I did the initial group. I know I'm no extraordinary painter, but I feel like I've come a long way since I dipped my initial 20+ McThralls. So I decided to try and give these guys a much better paintjob. This will also help me differentiate between my 2 units in my Gaspy3 tier list, which you can read about here in my Merc Battle reports thread on Focus and Fury.

Anyways, here's the Brute Thrall that I initially tested my scheme with.

I'm doing a lot of the ribbed tubing as green and some purple armor plates, mimicking the new Cryx scheme found on my Wraith Engine. The flesh was a new recipe I had, which started with a purple flesh tone acheived with a Citadel Leviathan Purple wash on top of the primer, followed by thin layers of Citadels's Rotting Flesh with stronger highlights as Rotting Flesh + Skull White.

As an example of what it looks like for the flesh, here's a McThrall after washing

and an obviously different one after highlighting.

Overall, I'm very happy with how this undead flesh is turning out. I really feel like it's a better undead fleshtone than my dipped McThralls have (shown below).
Aside from the red, I'm really happy with how the colors have turned. The zenithal priming technique helps out a bit as well. Anyways, I should hopefully be sealing this thing up in the morning so that it's good to go for another game on Friday night where it will be proxying for a Kraken yet again. Speaking of which, the Kraken + Gaspy3 has really been quite fun in the two games I've played them in so far.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-44100642855191975862012-06-11T09:13:00.001-07:002012-06-13T14:28:59.695-07:00Painting Update
I haven't been able to play as much as I'd like recently, but I've still gotten in some games with Damiano + Pirates, which has been fun, as well as Bart + Galleon. Basically, Galleon is a monster. Anyways, this is just a quick painting update before I get back into doing work today.

First is a merc painting update. Here are some of the farthest along models in my Trencher Commandos group, who I'm very happy with. I think they'[re turning into my best painted unit, along with my Boomhowler & Company.

Next up is a quick Cryx model. I loaned Jason a fair amount of my Cryx a while back in return for borrowing his Cygnar models before I decided that I wanted to own the Bad Seeds tier. I just got some of those back, and played a game of proxies of Gaspy3 + Kraken, where my lovely Wraith Engine played the Kraken. So it's been such a long time, I figured I should drop some paint onto this bad boy. Plus I'm testing out a new paint scheme, because there's nothing like having a new paint scheme after you're mostly painted with an army :p Anyways, still a work in progress, but I'm liking how it's looking.

So for the commandos, I'm really happy with how the leather and skin tones are working out, and I'm trying to punch up all my highlights in general since my models often look so dark. Hopefully that pans out. With the Wraith Engine, I think it'll be a nice change-up from my normal Cryx just because of all the colors on it: purple armor plating, red cloth, green goo everywhere, and then the metals. Hopefully I can finish it up soon and plop it back onto the table with my pGaspy list.

I've gotten in a 2 more games with eMagnus, now I'm 2-2! Anyways, I've also done a bit of work on eMags and his Renegades. So far, I'm pretty happy with how they're looking, although there's still a lot of work to do on Magnus, plus lots of highlighting and detail work on the Renegades. Also, if you're looking for battle reports, most of my forum time is spent on focus and fury now, for a variety of reasons. Anyways, I'm trying to keep a running log of my games, which you can find here. Right now it's just Mercenary battle reports, but there will probably be the occasional Cryx one whenever I play them again.

While I still haven't player Fiona at all. I have put a bit more paint on her. I'm really liking how she is turning out so far. One thing I'm not sure of is the water. I think that I just need to put more on, plus highlight the tops of it with almost pure white. Hopefully I'll get some games in with her soon too, we'll see.
Something that never ever happens.
First of all... Eyes! I never actually manage to make them work, but this time I did okay. Second, Tattoo! It also helped to cover up the uneven paint on that cheek of hers.

Anyways, ummm, yah, purple robes and reddish cloak... I don't always paint the same colors, I promise *shifts eyes guiltily* Next time I'll be sure to get more work done on Magnus' group.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-24739012078638529682012-04-26T01:12:00.002-07:002012-04-26T01:12:58.712-07:00epic Magnus and his RenegadesSo I did a bit of work on eMagnus tonight, in addition to getting Fiona primed as well.

We'll start with Fiona:

I began with zenithal priming as is usual for me as of late. She also has a slightly different post than is stock, partly because of her base. Beyond the slight staff position change, I'm also going to be doing water effects on the base to have waves crashing up onto the "cliff" that she's standing on... should be exciting.

Next up, eMagnus and his 2 trusty Renegades.

Primed:

Here they are again with a little bit of paint:

I wasn't sure initially what color I wanted to paint them in, but I took Dave Henry's suggestion of "Traitor Blue" since it would be nice and fluffy. I'm not sure how close I am to actually hitting the PP colors, but with a bit of mixing and layering, I think it's looking pretty good so far. I'm also going to try and do a bit of the metallic shading that I mentioned a few posts ago, but we'll see. I don't want to experiment too much here. Also, still pleasantly surprised with how much detail there is in the press mold on the base. I was aiming for a brighter Cygnar blue on the wrecked Ironclad, but I may have to turn to the "Fort Faulk" scheme there.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-75236422524117225742012-04-24T01:00:00.002-07:002012-04-24T01:05:44.974-07:00epic Magnus super epic base!So I got eMagnus and my 2nd Renegade off of Bartertown, but eMags didn't come with the epic base that he normally does. However, I do have a plastic Ironclad sitting around waiting to become Gallant, as well as some instant mold.

Voila! Super epic base! My eMagnus isn't on some light warjack, he's standing on top of a heavy warjack that he just wrecked!

So I just filled in a few of the gaps in the base after I took these pics. I'll post pics of him and Fiona after I get them primed.
jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-61398036831898597962012-04-20T09:43:00.002-07:002012-04-20T09:48:35.737-07:00Fiona is all buffed out!So Micah sent me a link on painting metals better earlier this week, which turns out is a really awesome walk-through on a really nice looking technique. Anyways, the author also showed what he thinks is a well prepped model. He sands the model with some sand paper and files, and then uses stiff dremel brushes to buff the model up. Since I've had a brush lying around from when I bought my dremel, I figured I'd give it a try with Fiona, since she's one of the other Merc casters that I wanted to try soon. Me being the total idiot, I forgot to take the before picture. Anyways, I'm hopefully going to paint her soon, and I'll let you know whether or not I feel the buffing makes a difference. She does look pretty cool though.

jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-61523781743376462332012-04-17T08:39:00.003-07:002012-04-18T09:49:56.059-07:00The greatest lightbox on earthOk so maybe the thread title is a little deceiving but I had a major photography breakthrough last night and it was all thanks to two of the greatest things on earth, the internet and milk. I can't remember where I saw it but someone recommended using an empty plastic milk carton as a light box. Since I had a nearly finished gallon of milk in the fridge at home I thought it would be a good excuse to drink some milk and take some photos.

After I polished off the milk I cut off the top, stuck a piece of white paper inside and pointed a desk lamp over the top of it, like so:

And here are some of the results:

Not too shabby for something made from common household items. The only problem is I can't fit squads or larger models in there. Really anything more than a single medium based mini is a stretch.

Jolly Angushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05764591180584008790noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-15827325861850496502012-04-06T09:52:00.003-07:002012-04-06T10:11:06.310-07:00Almost fully painted for KingdomCon!So with just a week left until KingdomCon, I only have to finish painting Snapjaw and a Bull Snapper and paint Wrongeye to be fully painted (aside from reinforcements).

So I finished sealing the Eliminators this morning. I'm not too happy with them because their faces look terrible, but they're freaking tiny! One thing I do like is their bases. I glued half a champagne cork to each base, and then cut it down and ripped out chunks to get the big rocks. Then I glued on some sand, and primed everything. The other thing I like is my new way to do snow. Mix up gloss varnish (I used Liquitex Gloss Medium/Varnish) with some baking soda. If it's got too much varnish in it, it won't look right when it dries, so err on the side of too dry. So I mixed that up and glopped it on.

I also finished up the last 4 Assassins earlier this week, but I did put snow onto all their bases since I was doing that to the Eliminators anways. I also cut off Disco Steve's raised arm and green stuffed something else terrible for a bicep, but at least he's not Disco Steve anymore.

I also finished up Rocinante for Ashlynn's list, and the Mangler and 2nd Nomad for Bart's list. Eventually I'll actually order a new sword for that Nomad from PP, but for now, the green stuffed version works.

Anyways, hopefully I'll be able to do well in the Saturday tourney at KingdomCon and have something to report here.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-79428676733619053152012-04-04T08:42:00.006-07:002012-04-04T08:46:36.313-07:00Canine Cancer 2012I just wanted to take a little time to promote a charity cause I'm working with. Bart doesn't usually have any issue with timed turns, but Ashlynn's can be a little rough. That said, she usually does okay, especially now that I've got a few more games in with that list.

On to the stupid little things that I've learned (and the mistakes that I hope to not make in the tournies):

DEF 17 on Ashlynn is hittable by ranged armies. If Ashlynn is going to be exposed, even on feat turn (unless the models will have to be in your control to shoot her), Quicken should be on her to take her up to DEF 19, which is outside the range of most things to hit even with boosting. Also, kill Rangers and support early if possible to further enhance her survivability against the ranged assassination.

I was retaught this lesson in one of my games against Siege. I managed to kill all his Rangers, most of the Nyss, and most of the Gun Mages. He still had 2 Defenders and his support with Siege (i.e. Reinholdt and Arlan). One doubleboosted shot from an aiming Defender ended her since it was outside the feat. Siege missed, etc, but 4 shots with boosted attacks at RAT 6 and 8 have the ability to hit DEF 17. DEF 19 is a little better. Engaging the shooters is best. This leads in a bit to the next point.

Models need to be in Ashlynn's control to be affected by Roulette. Don't run Anastasia to the very limit of her control, rather stay 2" inside with her.

This was from a game against eMadrak. I think I won this won by gaming the scenario (Guidons before they fixed it in SR2012 v. 1.3). I ran her up to the edge of Ashlynn's control, about 8" away from eMadrak. He had enough Kriel Warriors plus eMadrak there to easily end her though.

Anastasia di'Bray doesn't have Acrobatics, she has Parry. You have to open a hole for her to get through. Also, she turns into a 14" threat with Quicken. It's worth the 3 focus if you can get Espionage off.

I found this out in a different game against a strange Siege list, but it turns out you can't just walk her over both armies :p. Regardless, I did manage to hit my first Espionage. It's ridiculous and awesome.

eAlexia is good for reinforcements. Make sure to get her into melee with something, and bring her in on Ashlynn's feat turn to protect her.

DEF 15, ARM 19 (with 3 souls) is good, but if they have a ranged army, you gotta try and get engaged to take it up to DEF 19. It's going to be a lot harder to take down, even for Siege. Lucky for me he flubbed 2 of his damage rolls (and the fact that she has 10 wounds).

Flank Deployment is rough with 4 squads of infantry. Be sure to deploy the Steelhead Cav where they will be able to charge the things with the highest ARM.

Nothing particularly of note here other than a lack of familiarity with Flank and Radial scenarios. I just don't have a good idea for how to deploy initially here.

On scenarios with Reinforcements, don't put any support over there, or they'll get picked off.

A hunter and Aiyana and Holt coming in on Reinforcements just killed eEiryss and Rhupert dead. Can't be having any of that.

Block LOS to Bart! If he is on a hill, his jack wall needs to be up there too. DEF 13 or 15 isn't out of range of shooting, and ARM 19 is good, but good rolls can make the rest of the game really hard.

I was playing a game against Macbain, and forgot that Bart was standing on a hill. I had him in a pretty tight spot thanks to my feat covering all of the control point (which I think only needed two points to win for scenario). But Bart was on a hill. I was on ARM 19 at this point, so dice -5 there. Good thing he rolled 6,5,5 for 11 damage. He also popped his feat turn and surrounded himself with unkillable Kazazy and flooded the zone with the rest of them. His unit of eliminators sat in the zone and was unkillable too. So since I dropped Rocinante out of my Bart list to put it with Ashlynn, I didn't have any good ranged attacks to drop into Macbain. I killed all the KD kayazy in the zone with my assassins, took his eliminators down to tough, and then ran Bart with 2 focus + BDtH + Spiny Growth (ARM 23) to hide by a wall.

Bart has tough, and if you make the tough roll with Batten down the Hatches up, you aren't KD!

Same game as the previous point. Rocinante managed to trample to the opposite side of the wall from Bart. Needed 8's to hit, so he bought an attack and saved the last focus for boosting damage. Of course he rolled the 8 on 2d6 to hit, then boosted damage with his last focus (at dice - 6), took me down to 1 health left. 3 jackhammers later, Bart got hit once, and had to tough. I played it as KD because I totally wasn't thinking of BDtH, but he'd still be standing here. Then he took a potshot with Macbain, which missed the DEF 7 from cover and the -2 DEF from BDtH. He would have needed a 12 here, but it's always worth a shot, especially with how his dice seemed to be behaving this game. 2 Eliminators later, Macbain was dead, but I still had a Nomad or two depending on the range, Snapjaw, and some Assassins left to seal the deal.

Once you've popped Bart's feat, the only reason for him to be at all forward is for his jacks to benefit from BDtH. Other than that, he needs to stay back to avoid being assassinated.

This was a game against pKrueger. He didn't pop the feat early, so my Kayazy were able to wreck a lot of face, and Snapjaw killed the Feral (who had killed the Nomad that his druids dragged across the table. Bart moved up behind his jack wall, but the druids opened a big enough hole for a Stalker to charge in (taking 2 free strikes along the way thanks to reach on all my heavies and no KD from BDtH).

Beware casters with control wide debuffs and sprays (like Deneghra, Grim, etc) because they can kill Kayazy dead.

This was from a game with Bart against Grim Angus and Scattergunners with UA. Even though I had popped Bart's feat, Grim's feat can cancel this out in addition to preventing the Kayazy from charging on the next turn. Scattergunners aiming are RAT 7, to DEF 14 or 15. If the Scattergunners are outside Bart's feat, they can be effective RAT 8 or 10, which isn't too hard to get to 14 or 15. It might be useful to keep back a unit or two of Eliminators just to be able to jump in after the feat turn to engage things and kill others.

Anyways, that's just some of the random thoughts that I've had with my past 10 or so games with my lists (Ashlynn and Bart now if you hadn't caught on that I've dropped Durgen from the lineup). As for painting, Ashlynn's list is all done aside from Rocinante, and Bart's has 14 models left to paint: 4 Assassins, 4 Eliminators, a Nomad, a Mangler, Kell Bailoch, Wrongeye, Snapjaw, and a Bull Snapper. Most of these have some form of paint on them, so I'm hoping to get it all done in the next 2 weeks. KingdomCon here I come!jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-69194333749350080282012-03-18T15:15:00.002-07:002012-03-18T15:34:17.475-07:00To Infinity...and beyond!I haven't posted anything in a while because I've been working on submissions for the Kingom-Com painting competition and I don't want to spill the beans. I took a break today to paint up an Infinity model from the Haqqislam faction. This is as basic an infantry unit as you can get, a Ghulam.

When I first saw these models my first thought was, "*string of expletives* those are small!" So I had to adjust my techniques and expectations. I'm going for tabletop quality as it's pretty easy to have a fully painted Infinity army as far as model count is concerned. Anyway, keep an eye out for more Infinity and later in April my Kingdom-Con entries.
Jolly Angushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05764591180584008790noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-75527925584348380432012-03-17T08:46:00.004-07:002012-03-17T09:23:41.850-07:00It's that time of year again... KingdomCon!KingdomCon is a month away now, and I'm trying to get prepared for it. First of all, I'm trying to decide on the lists that I'm going to play. Second, I want to get all of the models painted that I'm going to be using. At this point, I'm only going to be playing in the 50 pt tournament on Saturday, but I'm tempted to go down Friday night and play in the 35 pt theme list tourney at midnight. We'll see though.

I've been playing Mercs relatively exclusively for the last 6 months or so, and I've got a few favorite casters. Namely, Ashlynn, Gorten, and Durgen are my favorites. However, I recently picked up Shae and all his pirates, Bart, Damiano, and Constance Blaize.

Right now, I'm fairly certain that Broadsides Bart will be my second caster because he creates a tough problem for my opponents with his high armor. In general, his list is going to be 3 heavy jacks, Wrongeye and Snapjaw with a Bull Snapper for even more armor, and Kayazy and solos to fill the rest of the points. The particulars of his list depends on what my primary list is. I want it to be able to do ranged and melee so that I don't have a lot of glaringly terrible matchups. So my initial thought was Durgen for ranged control, and then a crapton of Steelheads and Nyss. The idea here is that Durgen plus Nyss provide the ranged control, while the Steelheads provide a strong melee component that can deal with high armor or high defense thanks to Primed. However, strong ranged armies like Cygnar and Menoth have been giving me some issues with Durgen, so I may not stick with him. However, I'm going to be practicing with Dave Henry and others at "The Chamber" later today. If I still don't like how Durgen is performing for me, I may switch Durgen out for Ashlynn. This will change my Bart list up some (i.e. losing Wishnailer and Rocinante), but that list will still do what it was essentially designed for, i.e. being high ARM and tough to deal with.

So now on to the painting aspect. Thankfully, most things that I have in my Ashlynn list are already painted (i.e. Nyss, Forgeguard, Gun Mages, etc), so that will make things easy. However, before this week, most of Durgen's army was still not fully painted.

Last night, I managed to seal up and flock my 16 Steelhead Halberdiers:

Also, before I started on the Halberdiers, I did a fair amount of work on my Steelhead Cavalry:

The bases for these guys are done and sealed just so that I could have the front arcs marked for practice games. Stannis is also assembled and primed, but he's not in the list, so I haven't really done too much to him. The whole Steelhead contingent looks pretty cool together though, that's for sure.

Another model that I've had done for a while, but haven't photographed before now was my Wishnailer model (at least, I think that's the case. I'm too lazy to go back and look it up though). Anyways, he was one of the first models that I started using the zenithal priming on. I'm pretty happy with how his skin and robes came out though. If I ever get better at painting jewels, I'll probably go back and actually paint the ones on him.

On to the works in progress. First, eAlexia:

Her base right now is bland and uninspired, but I'll try and figure something out. Gameplay wise, anybody that can up her DEF to ridiculous levels is great IMO. I've only playtested her with Ashlynn, but I could see her being good with Fiona and Damiano as well.

Next up, Rocinante:

This is my conversion to put the kit onto the metal model. I left off the chains since I couldn't make them fit, but the model exudes character to me. Plus he's amazing with soooo many casters. I love him with Bart, Damiano, and Ashlynn. I haven't tried him with anybody else yet, but I could see him being great with Fiona too.

Another new release from Wrath, the Eliminators:

I haven't really used them much, but their stats are ridiculous. Anyways, I know I've shown them before, but it was a terrible picture, so this is to make up for that.

And last but not least, my gators:

I know that I owned them before, and then sold them. I feel like I'm really getting a lot better use out of them this time though. Partially, it's because of Spiny Growth in Mercs. The other part is making Cryx lists that aren't as overwhelmingly full of infantry, which seems like blasphemy to me, but whatevs. As I mentioned last time, I was trying to replicate what popgoestheworld did with his award winning warhog and other little piglets bases (found here). In terms of skin tone on Snapjaw, I'm going for something like this:

I found this pic on the Tennessee Aquarium website, but it really has an interesting color to it, which I like. So yah, we'll see if I can replicate it.

Anyways, that's all I've got for now. Stay tuned in the next 4 weeks for even more painting, and maybe even some battle reports. I've got pics of a game that Micah and I had, Shae tier 4 vs. Calaban at 35 pts. It was a blast with lots of ups and downs in it.

Until next time.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-67593329213004186482012-03-14T09:42:00.003-07:002012-03-14T09:47:31.007-07:00A few Merc WIPS - Eliminators & Bull SnapperSo first off, the bull snapper. He's going to be used in my Merc armies, specifically with Macbain, Bart, and possibly Damiano. The bases for my gator models is inspired by popgoestheworld's epic pig bases. His warhog won a gold in a painting competition somewhere, so yah, look it up, it's rad.

I'm not terribly sold on the colors yet, but it could be worse I guess. Snapjaw will definitely be a darker/blacker color than this, so we'll see.

Next is my first unit of eliminators. They only had one at my LGS, so I'm just painting up this unit first.

I didn't like the studio poses, so I switched an arm from each model to give to the other. I think it's okay, but not great. I'll have more to post whenever I can take pics of the 16 Steelhead Halberdiers and the 5 Steelhead Cav that I'm painting too. Oh yah, and Rocinante, a second Nomad, and Wrongeye and Snapjaw, all of which I'm trying to have painted by April 14th for KingdomCon.jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-13829379594389539922012-02-22T10:31:00.000-08:002012-02-22T10:36:29.032-08:00Vessel of Judgement - Done?So after untold hours, I think I'm done with this model except for sealing it and maybe putting some tufts of greenery/plant stuff on the base.

Anyways, here it is:

I'm actually pretty happy with everything, especially all the golds. Hopefully I'll be able to crank that piece out and have it done in the next week. I doubt I'll finish the whole thing before the end of January purely because of how busy this month is, but I'd like to get it done soon so I can get back to assembling/painting my own models again :pjonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-60589733109078121162011-12-13T10:36:00.001-08:002011-12-13T11:05:21.036-08:00Vessel of Judgement Commission - Part 1So James, one of the guys at my LGS who plays Menoth, Retribution, and now also Khador, got a Vessel of Judgement and wanted me to paint it for him. He magnetized it up so that it wouldn't be such a pain to transport.

So here are all the pieces minus the priesty dude. I might have knocked his head off, so I'll have to go back and pin that so it can't happen again.

Now, with the magnetization, it should be easier to paint since I can just pull the people out of the way. It turns out that the magnets hold okay together, but not really strong enough to be able to move the base just by holding the top of the Vessel. To fix that and to keep the chains onto the buff dude, I put in some pins for this thing. I pinned the chains to the Vessel, and they'll also glue in to the buff dude. I put two little pins into the back wheel section so that the magnets holds the piece close, and the pins keep the pieces aligned. This way, a little sheering force won't knock the piece off. I also put in a big pin that runs from the bottom of the base, through the large wheel section to the pipes section. It's fairly snug, so now just holding the top of the Vessel can pick everything up.

As you can see, I have tile on the base, just done by using a lot of GS, some water, and a piece of screen. The rest of the base will hopefully be suitably deserty.

So when it's put together, it'll look something like this:

As for the actual painting, James wanted something like the studio paint scheme. Seeing as I've never actually painted anything Menoth before, and how large this model is, I opted for using the Army Painter Skeleton Bone Primer to get everything in the right shade. This is where I'm at so far after a thin layer of bleached bone on top of the primer (plus a couple washes on the base and buff dude).

It looks like the white color shouldn't be too hard to build up from this, which is nice. I'm going to try and finish a quick basecoat of the bleached bone all over the white sections of this model before busting out the metals on this bad boy.
jonconcarnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01594505661901389534noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-28713792342313013542011-12-08T08:29:00.001-08:002011-12-08T08:39:35.406-08:00SDE Denizens, Round 1I was able to get some more painting done last night and decided to crank out some denizens. I'm coming at these minis differently than usual. Basically the look of the overall set is more important than the individual minis. Meaning, I'd rather have a fully painted set than a few really stellar models. With that in mind I'm trying to keep the paint techniques and style simple. For example:

1) I'm only doing a basecoat and rough highlights. This will allow me to move quickly but I think it will also add to the pixelated 8-bit feel.

2) I'm not doing NMM but I'm not using metallic paints either. Metallic paints take a long time for me and I think they'll stand out oddly against the cartoony feel of the minis. In Legend of Zelda Link's sword doesn't shimmer and shine. It's a brown stick but you still know it's a sword. So my steels will be grey and my golds will be yellow but I think you'll still be able to tell that it's a sword, not a grey stick.

3) Paint the heroes, dip the mobs. Yes that's right this will be my first foray into dipping. I plan on painting the heroes, drakes, mini-bosses and boss by hand but all the kobolds are getting dipped. I just need to decide what color their skin will be so I can get that color primer for Christmas. At this point I'm thinking blue.

With all that said here's my Paladin. I'm calling him a WIP because there's some touchups I'd like to do (stray paint etc)but in the interest of getting everything painted I'm moving on.

Jolly Angushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05764591180584008790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879228864029607172.post-48688726044796940312011-12-01T08:42:00.001-08:002011-12-01T10:34:50.222-08:00Super Dungeon Explore BoxingThere are plenty of Super Dungeon Explore unboxing videos and reviews out there so I thought I'd just do a boxing post in which we all admire the box that SDE comes in. The first thing I noticed about the box was how big and heavy it is. Quite the impressive product based on girth alone. If you squint you can see a fully grown man standing to the side of the box, engulfed in its shadow as the sheer awesomeness of SDE overshadows him. I have to say the cardboard is a little thin, if you run you hand across the box you can feel the corrugation. But in the less than 24 hours that I've had it the box has held up admirably.

Like many boxes this one has 4 sides.
